Independent Cities of Virginia
Independent cities have existed in Virginia since 1722, though the degree of independence
has varied. In the past some cities were enumerated separately from their adjoining counties; others with earlier dates of town status have no surviving censuses prior to 1900 that are separate from their adjoining counties.
