1831 Armstrong Roll of Choctaws
The first treaty providing for the removal of Choctaw Indians to the West was negotiated in 1820, but the major removal was carried out under the provisions of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, September 27, 1830. This treaty was made and ratified under the Removal Act of 1830. The customary census roll, prepared in 1831, is known as the Armstrong Roll. For individuals owning farms, it shows name, number of acres cultivated, number of persons in the family, number of males over 16, number of children under 10, location of farm, and other information.

1885 Census of Union Choctaw Indians only
The data on the rolls vary to some extent, but usually given are the English and/or Indian name of the person, roll number, age or date of birth, sex, and relationship to head of family. Beginning in 1930, the rolls also show the degree of Indian blood, marital status, ward status, place of residence, and sometimes other information. For certain years--including 1935, 1936, 1938, and 1939--only supplemental rolls of additions and deletions were compiled. Only persons who maintained a formal affiliation with a tribe under federal supervision are listed on these census rolls.

Dawes: Choctaw Applications, 1898-1914
Application forms filled out by persons seeking to claim official enrollment in the Five Civilized Tribes under the Dawes Commission. The applications contain additional information not abstracted to the census cards, filmed in M1186, Enrollment Cards of the Five Civilized Tribes, 1898-1914, and are numbered according to a different set of numbers. The application number may be obtained from the census card in M1186.
The applications are grouped first according to tribe, and relationships such as "by blood" or "minor," and finally numerical order. The originals of these applications are in the National Archives-Southwest Region in Fort Worth, TX. If the application is not found filmed here, write to the regional archives for further information.

Dawes: Choctaw Enrollment, 1898-1914
Enrollment (Census) Cards of the Five Civilized Tribes. The information given for each applicant includes name, roll number (individual's number if enrolled), age, sex, degree of Indian blood, relationship to the head of the family group, parents' names, and references to enrollment on earlier rolls used by the commission for verification of eligibility. The card often includes references to kin-related enrollment cards and notations about births, deaths, changes in marital status, and actions taken by the commission and the Secretary of the Interior. [The final roll of the western Cherokee. The roll ended the Cherokee Nation and allotted the land to the roll signers. This roll is the basis for tribal membership in the Cherokee Nation.]
