The page before it was 439C, in Williams County, so it would seem that this should be page 439D, but the handwritten page numbers don't match up. 439C's handwritten page is 9, but this page is numbered 8, and following pages jump to 11. Therefore, we have chosen to use ***D for the number. The Dakota Territory legislature created Mountraille County on January 4, 1873, from Buffalo County. It was named after Joseph Mountraille, a locally famed Metis voyageur and mail carrier from Pembina. The county was not organized at that time and on February 21, 1891, the now-named Mountrail County was attached to Ward County for "judicial and other purposes." North and South Dakota were admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889, as the 39th and 40th states. Mountrail County became a part of North Dakota. On November 8, 1892, the North Dakota legislature voted to dissolve the county and have its territory absorbed by Ward County. An election held in Ward County on November 3, 1908, authorized the re-creation of Mountrail County, but with different boundaries. The motion carried, but the result was contested in court. On January 16, 1909, the state Supreme Court upheld the vote and the county government was formed. The county is home to the headquarters of the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara people, and a large part of the county belongs to the tribe's Fort Berthold reservation. ======================================================================================================================================================================================================= CENSUS YEAR: 1880 STATE: Dakota Territory COUNTY: Mountrail MICROFILM #: T9-115 SUPV/DISTR: 15 ENUM/DISTR: 2 ENUMERATOR: Geo.
