Oneida County, ID 1870 Federal Census DISTRICT INFORMATION The files on-line for this census can be found in the following directory: http://www.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/id/oneida/1870/ ABOUT ONEIDA COUNTY: Oneida County was founded on January 22, 1864, one of the 17 counties created by the first legislature of Idaho Territory in 1863-64. It was named for Oneida Lake, New York, the area from which most of the early settlers had emigrated. Oneida Lake was named for the Native American Oneida Nation, one of the Iroquois Nations. Early in its history, Oneida County had the distinction of being Idaho's largest county by both area and population. When the U.S. Congress created the Montana Territory on May 26, 1864, it transferred a portion of Oneida County to Dakota Territory. Oneida County also lost significant territory to Wyoming Territory in 1868, Bear Lake County in 1875, Cassia County in 1879, and later to Franklin and Power Counties. Minor adjustments to boundaries occurred in 1871, 1875, 1877, 1917 and 1927 that gave Oneida County its present land area.
