Stiff Notes for the 1840 Census for Richmond County, Virginia - The bottom lines of the page were consistantly dark and difficult to read. - Page 41 (Handwritten page 5) The total for the column labeled "No. of white persons over 20 years of age in each family who cannot read and write" was shown on the Recapitulation page as 35. The actual transcribed total is 34. However, this column on line 25 was covered by tape that has turned dark, which made it impossible to read. Perhaps there is a "1" on that line/column. Line 1 has 1 white person over age 21 enumerated, but 4 white persons over 20 unable to read/write. - Page 45 (Handwritten page 9) Line 16 enumerates Thomas B. Bolch as head of household but the only free males enumerated are under age 10. - Page 48 (Handwritten page 12) The census column total for "Persons employed in agriculture" is shown as 30. The transcribed column total for "Persons employed in agriculture" is 31. Line 3 enumerates John Rock as being employed in both "agriculture" and "manufacturing", but there may have been an attempt to erase the "1" in the "agriculture" column, which would account for the discrepancy. - Page 50 (Handwritten page 14) Line 2 enumerates William Burnard as head of household but no free persons were enumerated. - Page 51 (Handwritten page 15) The column total for "No. of persons over 20 years of age who cannot read and write" is 11. However, this column from lines 1 through 8 was covered by tape that has turned dark, which made it impossible to read. The transcribed total is 7. Line 18 enumerates Austin Brockenbrough as head of household but no free persons were enumerated. - Page 52 (Handwritten page 16) The total for the column labeled "No. of white persons over 20 years of age in each family who cannot read and write" was shown on the Recapitulation page as 20. However, this column from lines 1 through 8 was covered by tape that has turned dark, which made it impossible to read. The transcribed total is 10. - Page 53 (Handwritten page 17) The total for the column labeled "No. of white persons over 20 years of age in each family who cannot read and write" was shown on the Recapitulation page as 18. The transcribed total is 15. The bottom portion of this page on the microfilm was dark; there may be a "1" on line 29 and a "2" on line 30. - Page 54 (Handwritten page 18) The "Number of persons employed in agriculture" was shown on the Recapitulation page as 34. The transcribed total for this column is 33, but there were numbers for this column on lines 6 and 7 that could not be clearly read, and were transcribed as zero. I could not reconcile the recapitulation totals with my transcribed totals. Line 29 enumerates the head of household as Richard H. Beasley, but the males enumerated are ages 5 to 9. The total for the column labeled "No. of white persons over 20 years of age in each family who cannot read and write" was shown on the Recapitulation page as 21. The transcribed total is 20. The bottom portion of this page on the microfilm was very dark. - Page 60 (Handwritten page 24) Line 16 shows 1 white person "deaf and dumb" under age 14. However no person under age 14 was enumerated. The mark possibly belongs on line 17. The 1850 Census enumerates "Richard S. Saunders, age 20, dumb" in the household of Henry S. Saunders. Line 29, head of household "John Sullivan": Row and column totals indicate that there should be a "1" in column "White males, age 50 and under 60". That column, and the column "White males, age 60 and under 70" are partially covered with dark tape and no marks can be seen on the microfilm.
