Seeking formal recognition from the federal government in 1849, the Mormons proposed calling themselves the “State of Deseret,” a word borrowed from the Book of Mormon meaning “honeybee.” The honeybee remains an important symbol to both the LDS Church and the state of Utah. A representation of industriousness and hard-work, a beehive surrounded by bees is at the center of both the Utah state flag and the official state seal. The federal government, however, rejected the proposed state name and instead proposed the name “Utah.” These were the only slaves listed in the entire state for 1850. The enumeration form did not ask for names of the slaves, but the enumerator entered them for lines 3 thru 26, putting them in the # Of Slaves field. ============================================================================================================ CENSUS YEAR: 1850 Slave STATE: UT COUNTY: Utah MICROFILM#: M432-919 ENUMERATOR: Thos.
