Transcriber's notes for 1870 census of Southampton Twp., Somerset Co. PA. http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/pa/somerset/1870/ The Enumerator was John H. Lepley who produced a very readable document. His spelling of the given names Allice and Henery were always the same and not the same as we use today. He also used an occasional nickname probably for personal friends. There is a John H. Lepley family shown near the end of the census in which he lists that John H. Lepley as unable to read or write. In all cases, his original writing has been recorded to the best of my ability. In cases of a difficult to read situation, several possibilities have been suggested and listed. E. V. Jan Garber
