Bernalillo, New Mexico 1870 Federal Census http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/nm/bernalillo/1870/ ======================================================================================= TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES: ======================================================================================= These notes were compiled by Virginia Grace, transcriber, and proofreader Ellen Horner. Among genealogists from NM it is known that ages can vary widely because Hipanics of that time did not celebrate birthdays or keep track of their ages. After a couple of decades they guessed their age. They were Catholic and often illiterate and seldom needed to remind themselves of their age - simple lives - so they guessed when the census taker came to call. There were no birth certificates, but sometimes when they married they had to produce their Baptismal record, so they would travel to the Church where they were baptized and get a written record from the priest who would painstakingly look it up in his book. Often the priest was the only person for miles who could read. Only rich folks sent their children to convent schools. V.G. In those days religious families often named all their sons Jose and then used the second name for everyday use. They would name all their daughters Maria, like Maria Dolores or Maria Ynes, and then call them by their second name. I think that is what this Lobato family did. That is why I wrote Jose G., as I found it in the 1880 census, to help the genealogist distinguish between the two Jose brothers. V.Grace. Note: See Jose Lobato, below. The enumerator recorded many of the names phonetically. Also, many of the names found on the 1870 census have been Anglicized. E.H. Isleta Pueblo There are two census image records for Isleta: (1) the Pueblo of Isleta, Bernalillo County, census recorded on 15 August 1870 by Ass’t Marshal Melchior Wemer, P.O. Los Lunas, NM, stamped pg.# 71A, and (2) Isleta Pueblo Reservation, Bernalillo County, census recorded on 28 October 1870 by Special Agent for the Census Service in New Mexico W.F. M.C.M. Arny, P.O. Abiquiu Rio Arriba Co., NM, stamped pg.#73A. Confirmation of census image page numbers was obtained from Heritage Quest census images online which shows the following: stamped page # 71A was recorded 15 August 1870; pg# 71B – blank; pg# 72A & B – blank; pg# 73A recorded 28 October 1870; pg# 73B – blank; pg# 74A & B – blank. Los Plazitas, Town of Juan Escasio, line 11 If you go to Ancestry search and key in Lorenza Tenorio for New Mexico, 1910, you will find the same Lorenza who is Juan's daughter in 1870 (at the right age). Also her father, Juan Escascida (Escasio-1870) is living with her. His age is 65 and in 1870 census he is 25 (right age).they are living in Bernalillo, Sandoval county. They apparently moved away from Las Placitas. It was not easy to find him, because I usually do not find folks that far into the future - 40 years. But I believe I tried different spellings of similar sounding Spanish names (Escorcida is a rare name in NM.) How do we know this is the same individual, you may ask. He and daughter – same name, he and daughter right age. Both were born in NM. I believe this is the same family. – V.G. Jose G. Lobato, line 14 This family had two sons with the name Jose. The enumerator identified them with "1st and 2nd". I looked them up in the 1880 census and found only one Jose still with the family. And he matched in age to Jose (2nd) and his full name was Jose G. Lobato. I believe the other Jose had left the family. V.G.
