Winston, MS 1870 Federal Census (NOTES) Transcriber's paragraph The Enumerator of the 1870 Winston County Census was Mr. H.L. Parkes, assistant Marshall, who began the Census on July 6, 1870. His name appears on page 400A, the beginning of the Winston County Census. A total of 8984 persons were tabulated. There were no Districts, Townships or Cities on the Census. The local identification was the Community Post Office. This identifier is placed at the beginning of each printed page. I regret that I was unable to follow all the handwritten page numbers of Mr. Parkes. I did place these numbers in the remarks area at the beginning of each record. A more reliable search procedure would be the printed page numbers. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to decipher every name on the Census. Questionable spellings were identified with an asterisk. Alternate spellings are provided under remarks. R.
