In the 1840 census for Pontotoc, MS on page 156 (first name on the page), the 
census taker recorded the name Joseph Prevet.

My mother and her dad and granddad Joe Pruitt VI and III spelled it Pruitt, 
on up to my GG Granddad, my GGG Joe Pruitt, he spelled it Prewett and Pruitt. 
His people in Georgia spelled it Prewett and Pruett.
