Newton, MS 1850 Federal Census ftp://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/ms/newton/1850/ ================================================================================== Proofreader's Comments ================================================================================== Enumerator: Thomas E. Evans Dates from August 5, 1850 thru September 30, 1850 Following are some of the comments of the reviewer, Dr. Harold Graham Pres. Of the Newton Co. Historical and Genealogical Society: The Enumerator has provided one of the more legible records available. In general it is quite readable. He does use certain nuances in his spelling, however, that are quite noticeable. For Example: 1. He has a proclivity for using Y when I is needed. (Cinderalla becomes Cynderalla and Windham becomes Wyndham) 2. He chooses the more regal Anne instead of the more common Ann, when Ann was most likely the correct form in most cases. 3. He struggles with compound names. Mary Ann becomes a joined Maryanne or a separated Mary anne. I could find no geographical logic to the way that the information was collected. He begins on the eastern side of the county (Chunky), but criss-crosses the county a number of times. It is almost if he sat in the courthopuse and waited for people to come in and be interviewed. ==================================================================================
