Hampshire County, Massachusetts 1790 U.S. Federal Census TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES: There were two enumerator's for this county being Wm. Shepard and David Sexton. David Sexton's penmanship was nicer and much easier to read but he didn't seem to pay the attention to detail that Wm. Shepard did. He did place brackets that seem to link households and, sometimes, added the notation "1 house" but a great many more of these are found in the townships that were enumerated by Wm Shepard which leads me to wonder about David Sexton's consistency in doing this. Wm. Shepard made note to the left of the name of military rank, which David Sexton never did. Sometimes only a little piece of the last letter is visible as the left edge of the page was clipped off. In cases where a fragment could be seen I've made a notation in the Remarks column and used ** marks after the first name. Always to the left of the name is found Military rank, Wid'o, Dr., D'n or Deac'n I assume these to be abbreviations for Deacon, and Rev'd. To the right of the name is found abbreviations of Esq'r, Hon'ble, Jun'r or Jr. Households that are linked by brackets are so noted in the Remarks column. =========================================================================================================================== This Census was transcribed by Linda Talbott and proofread by L.
