After this section there are notes about specific sections of the transcription. 1900 Dickinson County Kansas Census T623-478 Notes Several pages of the census have been taped. The tape has darkened and as seen on the film, completely blocks out the words beneath. At some point in time, someone reviewed the census, making annotations over heads of families, immigration information and occupations. The annotations make the original information impossible to read. The handwriting in some districts is almost impossible to read. In Abilene City, Ward 1, the enumerator had a serious numbering problem. House, Dwelling and family numbers are not continued and are at times out of order or confusing. A and B pages have been switched and renumbered. I've carried streets, house, dwelling and family numbers through whenever possible, but there is no assurance this is correct. Some information on the census is WRONG. Enumerators wrote down what they thought they were hearing. People giving information to the enumerators didn't always know the answers. The census was taken in the summer in a farming community. Many many people are not where they 'should' be - they are with relatives helping on the farm. I know for a fact that my great uncles are listed twice on this census, in two different families with different birth date and place information. I'm going to believe the information given by their mother, rather than their aunt - but it is a clear example that the information is only as good as the source. If you find a relative on this listing - get a copy of the film and look at the pages yourself. You may see something entirely different from what I read. If you don't find a relative that you think should be here, check all the people with no last names or questionable names. Everytime I review a sheet I see names I question. It was a difficult census to transcribe and mistakes are bound to exist. ============================================================================================ ABILENE CITY, WARD 2 NOTES; 485 family or S- l 30 a duplicate 486 s-14 l 64 a duplicate ============================================================================================ FLORA TOWNSHIP NOTES: Page 82A Dwelling 27 Line 21-29 I think this is one family - On the 1880 census there is a family of Armstrongs: husband John 48, Jane 47, Jonus or James 27, Ann 15, Irvin 13, Isabell 11 and Mary J 8.
