Transcriber's notes for the Breckenridge County, KS 1860 US Federal Census This was transcribed from microfilm at the Emporia Public Library, Emporia, Kansas. The library was gracious and let us Xerox the census, and it was typed and proofread using the copies as well as checking questionable items with the microfilm. All surnames were also looked up in the 1860 Kansas Census Index by ? (Ron Vernon?) and also looked up in the 1860 Kansas census of those who were from North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. If something unusual was noticed, it is noted in the text line for each individual. There were several occurrences of persons that appeared to be recorded as the wrong sex based on their first name. There was also one page that contained marks in the "married" field, but it is doubtful the persons who married based on their ages. The marks were different than the usual "x" that was found so it may have been some type of statistic the census person was trying to obtain. Regina Falcetto Transcriber
