The county was originally called Stark County, and early censuses such as this one list it this way. However, the name was changed from Stark to Starke. The reason for the change is not known, but it is thought to have occurred around 1860 as the result of a clerical error by an official in Indianapolis. ====================================================================================================================================================================== CENSUS YEAR: 1860 Mortality STATE: IN COUNTY: Starke TOWNSHIP: Center, California, Jackson, Wayne & Railroad ENUMERATOR: E. ENUMERATOR REMARKS: No particular disease has prevailed to any unusual extent. Mary C. Simmons (8) fell out of the door, was around about two weeks before she was taken down. Dorothy Weller (24) was taken down and in a few hours expired; no particular cause could be assigned. Martha Shelly (25) was shot by her brother a little older than herself - he stood in the door with a loaded gun, which went off; the ball went through both thighs. I have none of the facts called for in instruction 12 under the head of "Remarks". ====================================================================================================================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access the rest of our growing collection of FREE online census transcriptions by going to the following URL: http://www.us-census.org/ ======================================================================================================================================================================
