The county was originally called Stark County, and early censuses such as this one list it this way. However, the name was changed from Stark to Starke. The reason for the change is not known, but it is thought to have occurred around 1860 as the result of a clerical error by an official in Indianapolis. ================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================= CENSUS YEAR: 1840 STATE: IN COUNTY: Starke TOWNSHIP: All MICROFILM#: M704-94 ENUMERATOR: Edward Smith STAMPED PAGE NO: 84 ENUM/DATE-RANGE: Not Listed ================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================= |FREE WHITE MALES |FREE WHITE FEMALES |TOTAL OCCUPATIONS |PENSIONERS |WHITE PERSONS |SCHOOLS & UNIVERSITIES |WHITE | | 5 10 15 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 | 5 10 15 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 | |REV or |DEAF&DUMB BLIND & INSANE |UNIV STU|>20yr | Name of Head of Family |to to to to to to to to to to to to 100|to to to to to to to to to to to to 100| MIN- NAV NAV PROF|MILITARY |to 14- 25 INSANE INSANE|or #of ACAD #of PRIM #of PUB|ILLIT-| LN# LAST NAME FIRST NAME |5 10 15 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 100 up |5 10 15 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 100 up |TOTAL ING AGR COM MFG OCEAN CANAL ENG |SERVICE AGE|14 25 up BLIND PUBLIC PRIV |COLL STU GRAM STU COM STU CHG|ERATE |TRANSCRIBER'S REMARKS ================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================= 1 Prett William . 1 . . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . 1 1 . . 1 . . . . . 5 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 Parish Azariah . . 1 . . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 . . . . . . . 3 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 Prett Nehemiah . . . . . . . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 West William 1 . . . . . . 1 . . . . . . . . . . 1 . . 1 . . . . 4 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5 West Nimrod 1 . . . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 . . . . . . . . 3 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6 Chambers Andrew . . 2 1 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . 2 . . 1 . . . . . . 7 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7 Tyner William 1 . . . 2 . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 . . . . . . . . 5 . 2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8 Livingston Walter . 1 . . . . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . 1 . . . . . . . 3 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 . 9 Smith Richard . 2 . . . 1 . . . . . . . 2 1 . . 1 . . . . . . . . 7 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 . 10 Wooden Peter 1 . . . . 1 . . . . . . . 1 1 . . 1 . . . . . . . . 5 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 11 Maxwell Arthur 2 . . . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 . . . 1 . . . . 5 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12 Vandolson Samuel 2 2 . . 1 1 . . . . . . . . . 2 1 . 1 . . . . . . . 10 . 2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 13 Smith Edward 1 1 . . . 1 . . . . . . . 1 . . . 1 . . . . . . . . 5 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 14 Barton Thomas 1 1 1 . . 1 . . . . . . . . 1 . . 1 . . . . . . . . 6 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 . 15 Wagner Jacob 1 1 1 1 . 1 . . . . . . . 1 1 . . . 1 . . . . . . . 8 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 16 Hopkins John W. 1 1 1 . . . 1 . . . . . . 2 . 2 . . 1 . . . . . . . 9 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 17 Howard David . . . . 1 . . . . . . . . 2 . . . 1 . . . . . . . . 4 . 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
