Monroe County, IL 1820 Federal Census - Notes TRANSCRIBER NOTES / INTRODUCTION Fourth Federal Census 1820 Monroe County, Illinois. This transcription attempts to reproduce the original 1820 document as faithfully as possible. However, In the almost 200 years since it's creation the original document has suffered some irreversible physical damage resulting the loss of some data. Several families isolated by the hard winter and lack of roads were estimated using hearsay information provided by a neighbor. These families will be noted in the Enumeration. Surnames appear exactly as enumerated. When seeking a Surname all soundex equivalents should be examined. Arithmetic and Spelling errors made by the Enumerator have not been corrected and remain as submitted by the Enumerator, Mr. Prince Bryant, in December 1820. The only names that appear in this schedule are heads of families or persons who were not enumerated within a family or household unit. Because printed forms were not generally used, all or part of the schedules of some localities carry less than the prescribed 32 columns. This occurred in instances where no enumeration was made of persons belonging to groups ordinarily listed under these missing columns. Occasionally, where the number of persons belonging to these groups was so small they were listed numerically or by name at the end of the schedules of the locality in which they were enumerated. Legend ( )= transcriber comment /?/ = all data for this family has been lost. * = a single character has been lost, or shows ambiguity. ? = transcriber's opinion of lost or damaged data. - = skipped entry John C.
