LaSalle, IL 1850 Federal Census http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/il/lasalle/1850/ ============================================================================ This Census was transcribed by Sandy Sterling and is partially proofread by Karen Grinolds and Lael Fuller for the USGenWeb Census Project® http://www.us-census.org/ ============================================================================ unproofread pages are: 348-359 Northville 367-377 Freedom 389-393 Serena If you would like to help proofread this census, please fill-out and submit the Proofreader Volunteer Form at: http://www.us-census.org/proof/vol-form.htm ============================================================================ The enumerator jumps back and forth between towns, so there are no page range groups for all of the townships. He also changed towns in the middle of pages. The townships in this county during the 1850 census were: Adams Freedom Oplier Brookfield Grand Rapids Ottawa Bruce Hope Rutland Dayton Manlius Salisbury Deer Park Menden Serena Dimmick Meriden South Ottawa Eagle Mission Troy Earl Northville Utica Eden Ophir Vermillion Farm Ridge Ophlier Waltham ============================================================================ TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES =================== There were two Enumerators for this census. For the most part, the enumerator did not identify separate families within the same dwelling. Enumerator's capital Ls and Ss are virtually identical, so the one that seemed most reasonable was used. The enumerator jumps back and forth between towns. He also changed towns in the middle of pages (an example is on page 229B/handwritten 458). In addition, in at least one case, it seems the husband is living in one town and the wife in another (pp 223B and 224A/handwritten 446-7). Pages 228B and 229A are in reverse order. Enumerator's note is in Remarks Column. Pages 232-285 Enumerator often changes towns in the middle of the page. Pages 360-366 Enumerator left one full page and one partial page of birthplace blank. Enumerator's capital "L"s / "S"s and "I"s / "J"s are virtually identical. Used the one that seemed most reasonable. Enumerator linked middle initials to first and/or last names which is not always clear. Pages 379-388 Spelling is erratic. A name changes from line to line. Elizabeth is consistently spelled with an 's' rather than a 'z'. Certification is on census page 386B (line 672) rather than at end of census. Note at end of Earl (line 857). =================================================================================================== The following appeared on page 347A =================================================================================================== 347A 32 347A 33 No of Dwellings 2496 No Deaths 373 347A 34 No of Families 2562 No Farms 928 35 Por Es**s 46 36 No of W Malles 7585 Pages 404 37 No of W Females 6618 38 Total 14204 Examd by 39 Color Male 10 J J Moore 40 Color Female 6 41 Aggregate 14220 April 16, 1851 42 1850 State of Illinois LaSalle County I Wm H L Wallace Assistant Marshall for said county do hereby ceritfy that the foregoing schedule No 1 of the Free inhabitatants contains three hundred and thirty nine pages and that the same is a ful and perfect enumeration of the free inhabitants in the towns of Ottawa Salisbury Hope Eden Eagle Vermillion Bruce Farm Ridge Deer Park South Ottawa Grand Rapids Brookfield Dayton Utica Waltham Dimmick Troy Meriden Ophir Rutland Manlius and Mission in said county being all of said county except the towns of Freedom Earl Serena Adams and Northville taken and returned by J C Champlin assistant marshall and that the same is well and truly taken according to the tenor of my oath of office and the instructions I have received from the Department of the Interior at Washington City.
