These censuses were taken from 1850 to 1900, although not all have survived. By 1902, most states had implemented vital records laws and the mortality schedules were phased out. It is important to remember that the information is available only for the year immediately preceding the census. Those who died outside of this range were never enumerated. Even then, the information was under- reported. According to U.S. Public Health Service estimates, only about 60% of deaths were enumerated in the mortality schedules. ---------------------Begin Actual Transcription---------------------------- TRANSCRIBER REMARKS: Bond County was formed in 1817 out of Madison County. It was named for Shadrach Bond, who was then the delegate from the Illinois Territory to the United States Congress, and who became the first governor of Illinois, serving from 1818 to 1822. ================================================================================================================================================ CENSUS YEAR: 1850 Mortality STATE: IL County: Bond MICROFILM #: T1133-58 ENUMERATOR: P. ENUMERATOR REMARKS: The year 1849 will be long remembered in this section of country asone of pestilence and 1850 as almost a year of family owing to nearly a general failure of crops. Cattle suffered very much through the winter for want of hay, which generally failed. There was a few deaths mentioned above of which the disease could not be acertained. They are written "unknown." ================================================================================================================================================ CENSUS YEAR: 1850 Mortality STATE: IL County: Bond MICROFILM #: T1133-58 ENUMERATOR: P. In the northwestern part of the county, lime and sand stone abound, also bituminouse coal of a good quality.
