Pneumonia seems to be the most fatal, and occurs mostly in the spring. It is caused principally by exposure characteristic of the rough life led in the mountains and it is difficult for the patient to rally when taken with the disease at this altitude of about 8000 feet. Typhoid Fever is largely caused by impure water. Most of the drinking water for Silver Cliff is obtained from Goose Creek about 3 miles distant. Large herds of cattle grase along its vaults and tributaries and the impurities of dead animals are washed into the creek. Many of the miners are afflicted with rheumatism from warsing in wet mines. There was quite a number of hospital deaths I was unable to obtain through ***** efforts were made to secure the s****. The death rate is not accurate to as to the cliff - as the population of these mining districts are so transient - and no clue can be obtained to many deaths in families that are gone, In my opinion the death rate should be double that indicated by the schedule.
