Hempstead, AR 1850 Federal Census http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/ar/hempstead/1850/ ================================================================================================ DESCENDANT NOTES for Solomon Melson furnished by Bob Melson ================================================================================================ On page 247B (lines 39-42) and 248A (line 1) Red Land Township, the Enumerator incorrectly recorded the head of household's name as Soloman Milson. It should be Solomon Melson. I'm descended from Solomon Melson (through his second son, Leandus Elmington) and can point to other transcriptions of earlier documents (tax lists, earlier census returns, land patents) where the surname is correctly spelled with an "e". The funny part of this -- black humor, I suppose -- is that Thomas Milson, who also appears in the Hempstead County census, was thought for years to be the oldest son of Solomon's father and has only in the past few years been "divorced" from the family -- not through any effort of mine, I might add. ================================================================================================ DESCENDANT NOTES for Solomon Melson furnished by Sue Stevenson ================================================================================================ In looking at the Hempstead, AR 1850 Federal Census, pages 247B and 248A, the census taker recorded the head-of-household name as Soloman Milson. This is incorrect. The correct spelling of this head of household's name is Solomon Melson. He was my ggg-grandfather. There are other MILSON families in this census and they were correctly recorded. REBECCA MELSON MARRIED THOMAS MILSON. I know it is confusing because they were always together and many assumed all had the last name of Milson ================================================================================================
